TELESHOPPING EN RUIMTELIJKE ORDENING

There is an increasing usage of videotexsystems and among them teleshopping draws increasing attention. In the Netherlands and in other countries there is a lack of information about the effects of teleshopping on behaviour. In order to obtain more information, a postal interview was undertaken of 150 consumers of the James telesuper in Amstelveen, a Dutch town. Two main motives for the use of teleshopping are mentioned by most interviewees: greater comfort, because there is no need to carry shopping (74%); and time saving (47%). The teleshoppers mainly consist of the following categories: (a) older people who live on their own; (b) young people who are either married or living together; (c) young, working single people; and (D) traditional family households. Besides using teleshopping for items that are not required daily, people continue to do errands in the shops. The total number of shopping trips appears to have decreased, but there is not a clear substitution of other activities during the time saved. (Author/TRRL)
