Urban and regional planning increasingly enjoys public and political attention. This trend is discussed in more detail in the paper. It is asserted that the growing amount of laws and regulations in the Netherlands has contributed to the present need of integral frameworks. It is also concluded that the market-oriented planning bears relationships with recent theoretical literature about public planning. In addition, the main characteristics are given of the planning methodology, which is used in spatial incentive planning in practice. The paper is concluded with some critical remarks. (Author/TRRL)
