HIGHWAY ACCIDENT REPORT: SISKIYON UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT SCHOOLBUS/AUTOMOBILE COLLISION AND ROLLOVER, I-5, ASHLAND, OREGON, MAY 9, 1975

On May 9, 1975, a 1972 schoolbus carrying 20 persons crashed through a section of guardrail on the northbound portion of Interstate 5 in Ashland, Oregon. The vehicle fell down a steep slope and rolled about its longitudinal axis before it came to rest in an upright position about 213 feet from the edge of the pavement. Except for one sidepost-roof bow connection, the roof separated from the bus body. Nineteen of the 20 occupants were ejected through the gap created by the roof separation. Of the 19 occupants ejected, 3 were killed and 15 were injured. The only occupant who remained in the bus was not injured. The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of this accident was: (1) The failure of the schoolbus driver to select the proper gear to descend the steep grade, and (2) the maladjustment of the brakes on the bus.
