A PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF MAKEBASE: AN INFORMATION RETRIEVAL SYSTEM FOR STRUCTURAL MECHANICS - EXAMPLES OF INFORMATION MANAGEMENT IN GEOMECHANICS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN GEOMECHANICS, 11-15 APRIL 1988, INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA. VOLUMES 1 - 3

Computer program development based on the finite element/boundary element methods, as well as satellite programs in the form of pre- and postprocessors, is now receiving considerable attention from the engineering community. Output of related literature from the theoretical and practical application point of view has grown at a prodigious rate in recent years. Makebase is a special purpose, menu-driven, database system which stores literature references and detailed information on the finite element and boundary element software, and software information on pre- and postprocessors interfacing the finite element and boundary element programs. Additional topics included: optimization techniques, and expert systems in connection to the structural/mechanical engineering. Exmake is an expert system under development, helping an inexperienced makebase user to choose keywords for an effective subject search. Makebase is implemented on vax-11/780 (vms) computer and regularly updated. The presented paper describes makebase and outlines its applications in the field of geomechanics. (Author/TRRL)
