THE COMPUTER-AIDED ANALYTICAL SYSTEM FOR THE GEOTECHNICAL CHARACTERIZATION PROBLEMS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN GEOMECHANICS, 11-15 APRIL 1988, INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA. VOLUMES 1 - 3

This paper presents on-going research into the development of computer-aided design and analytical system for geotechnical characterization problems. The system is currently being evolved on the microvax hardware configuration using the graphic kernal system in FORTRAN 77 language. The main goal is to set up the fully interactive analytical system in which the unknown parameters concerning (1) geometry, (2) material constitutive law and (3) loading system are determined through the use of a finite element method (fem) program and appropriate optimization procedure. Such system characterization analysis is based on the concept of minimizing the discrepancy between the numerical prediction and the actual behaviour of the geotechnical system and therefore requires, as the standard procedure, the in-situ field measurement data to define the suitable error function. Previous studies have proved that such a system is not only a feasible project but also has great potential to improve the monitoring system of geotechnical engineering practices. (Author/TRRL)
