DISCRETE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF GRANULAR MATERIAL UNDER DYNAMIC LOADING. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN GEOMECHANICS, 11-15 APRIL 1988, INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA. VOLUMES 1 - 3

There has been recent interest in analyzing soil and other granular material on the microscopic level so that microscopic properties can be related to macroscopic phenomena, such as failure. The discrete element method provides a numerical tool for conducting such analyses. Here the basic theory behind the method is reviewed and various formulations are derived from a finite element basis. Errors in some formulations are highlighted for problems involving large strains and rotations. Examples of applications of the method are described including projectile penetration into a soil, embankment collapse and flow of granular material from a hopper. (Author/TRRL)
