ANALYSIS OF STRESSES IN THE PILLAR ZONE OF TWIN CIRCULAR INTERACTING TUNNELS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN GEOMECHANICS, 11-15 APRIL 1988, INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA. VOLUMES 1 - 3

An elastic and elasto-plastic finite element analysis of two interacting circular underground openings have been carried out for plane strain condition using Hoek-Brown yield criterion. Three pillar width (w) to tunnel diameter (d) ratios and three insitu stress conditions for each w/d ratio have been considered. The tunnels have been considered to be excavated simultaneously. The results have been compared with those from the excavation of a single tunnel and the effect of tunnel interaction on the stresses developed in the pillar zone has been described. (TRRL)
