THREE-DIMENSIONAL MOVEMENTS OF EMBANKMENT ENDS ON SOFT LAYER. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN GEOMECHANICS, 11-15 APRIL 1988, INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA. VOLUMES 1 - 3
This paper examines the effect of embankment width on the failure mechanism, and the design considerations for substructures beneath bridges. Special attention is given to the end parts of the embankment to which the bridge abutments are attached. Three dimensional upper bound stability analyses was undertaken. A series of centrifugal model tests were also undertaken using a drum centrifuge to verify the results obtained by the analyses. It was found that the longitudinal movement beneath the abutments increases with increasing embankment width. The failure mechanism adopted was supported by the results of the centrifugal model tests. (TRRL)
