The effects of loading sequence and soil nonlinearity on the deformation behavior of a pile group were investigated in this paper, using a nonlinear three-dimensional finite element (fe) technique. Specific attention was given to: the distribution of displacements; stresses; axial forces; shear forces; and flexural moments in individual piles and in the pile cap. Computer codes were written for post-processing of fe results to determine the bending moments in the piles and the cap, as well as to plot the contour of stress and displacement components of the pile-cap-soil system. An automated scheme implemented in the code enabled the fe mesh to be generated. Emphasis was given to the identification of the manner in which loads were shared by individual piles in the group.
