An elasto-plastic analysis of a circular tunnel excavation in layered rock using the coupled finite element and boundary element method (febem) is presented. In this article the coupling procedure, the elasto-plastic formulation and application to the layered medium are discussed. The results of febem analysis are compared with those obtained using a finite element method (fem). The computation time and the number of iterations as required by febem and fem are compared. The effect of variation of the modulus of elasticity upon deformation, yielding and stresses is also discussed. (TRRL)
