ANALYSIS OF FAULT INITIATION AND FAULT SPACING IN ELASTO-PLASTIC SEDIMENTARY MATERIALS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN GEOMECHANICS, 11-15 APRIL 1988, INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA. VOLUMES 1 - 3
A mathematical small-strain analysis of the initiation and spacing of faults in sedimentary rock is described in this paper. The rigorous localisation theory (initiation of faults) of Rudnicki and Rice is confirmed in a somewhat intuitive manner, and extended to the spacing of faults. The results obtained by this mathematical analysis are verified by a finite element simulation of faulting in a horizontal rock layer using a druker prager yield criterion. (TRRL)
