THE USE OF LEES' ALGORITHM IN THE ANALYSIS OF SOME GROUND HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER PROBLEMS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN GEOMECHANICS, 11-15 APRIL 1988, INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA. VOLUMES 1 - 3
A numerical model incorporating Lees' algorithm, capable of predicting coupled simultaneous transient non-linear heat and moisture movement in unsaturated soils, is used to achieve solutions for two problems. Results obtained for the first, one of a soil column subject to fixed boundary conditions, are in agreement with previously held views derived from non-linear heat conduction analyses, that Lees' algorithm produces unconditionally stable and convergent results. The importance of maintaining adequate timestep size control to reduce oscillatory behaviour is however illustrated, together with the use of an averaging technique to achieve the same end. For the second problem, one of seasonal changes in temperature and moisture content in the ground, the results show that Lees' algorithm compares favourably with a Crank-Nicolson scheme and is capable of coping with time varying Dirichlet boundary conditions. In the present circumstances, the results give confidence to the use of Lees' algorithm. (Author/TRRL)
