RAIL CROSSING PROGRAM ON TRACK TO GET SCHOOL BUSES ACROSS SAFELY
The article describes how technology, enforcement, and education are keys to cutting railroad grade crossing accidents, injuries and fatalities. Railroad grade crossing safety is noted as an issue of importance to both school bus operators and the federal government. The latter has authorized the expenditure of nearly $2 billion on grade crossing protection under Section 203 of the Highway Safety Act. The efforts and resources of those involved in the development and implementation of the grade crossing safety program have been concentrated in 3 areas: technology and engineering; enforcement; education and communication. Each of these areas is discussed. One public education program, 'Operation Lifesaver,' launched in Idaho in 1972 is noted.
