EVALUATION OF JAIL AS A PENALTY FOR DRUNK DRIVING
This paper reviews studies of jail sentences for drunk driving and summarizes the lessons learnt. The paper considers 4 areas: the effectiveness of the sanction as a specific deterrent to recidivism; the effectiveness of the jail penalty as a general deterrent; and the problems presented to the courts and to the corrections departments by the use of mandatory jail penalties; and the potential alternatives to incarceration. An attempt is made to draw conclusions from this research and provide suggestions for future research.
