PROTECTING INFANTS AND TODDLERS FROM HEAD-ENTRAPMENT INJURIES

A study is reported in which head and neck measurements of infants and young children representative of the U.S. population were taken to provide the Consumer Product Safety Commission with size and shape data needed for standards on safe designs of cribs, beds, expandable gates, and other products hazardous for young children. The 490-page final report of the study shows scatter plots of measurement values versus age, along with statistical results for 34 manual measurements by subject group. The report also presents coordinate values and full-size plots of anatomical landmark and head contour points for the small, average, and large subject in each of 4 age groups. A few of those results re-presented here.
