CALIFORNIA'S DRUNK DRIVERS NOW PAY THROUGH THEIR POCKETBOOKS AS WELL AS THROUGH THE COURTS
The article describes how state laws in California are helping drunken drivers involved in fatal accidents be convicted for murder. Examples are described of cases where the guilty driver has been convicted of second degree murder and recieved a jail sentence. Another California law authorizes government agencies to seek reimbursements up to $500 for expenses incurred in such emergency responses. It is noted that drunk driving traffic accidents cost a police department more than $500,000 (in 1985) including legal expenses, insurance, medical care and emergency response time.
