A REVIEW OF G.B. VEHICLE FUEL EFFICIENCY AND PRICE-INDUCED ENERGY CONSERVATION, 1973-84

The major changes in vehicle fuel efficiency and price-induced energy conservation that have taken place in Great Britain from 1973 to 1984 are reviewed. The transport energy sector has gained in relative share against both the domestic and industrial energy sectors of the U.K. economy; transport energy has held up and grown during a major recession. The real 1984 price of petrol is 35% higher than in 1973, and yet real incomes have also risen; so the prospects for continuing use of petrol will depend on the impact of both energy conservation and inter-fuel substitution (diesel for petrol) in car use. The New Car Energy Conservation Programme launched in 1978 has delivered a very real gain in car efficiency, and the U.K. has seen the beginnings of a large-scale introduction and popularity of diesel cars. Also in the long term the prospects for battery cars and light goods vehicles are perhaps better than for many years.
