CATEGORIZATION OF DAMAGE TO CONCRETE BRIDGE DECKS IN SAUDI ARABIA
This is a report of salient findings gathered as part of a national study ot 21 defective bridge decks in Saudi Arabia. The bridges are representative case studies of the types of damage identified as most prevalent in short-span bridge decks. Damage to the deck system has been classified into structural damage and material damage. It is noted that the shape and form of damage most likely to occur in a given situation is a function of bridge geometry, proportioning, constuction materials and tehcniques, and environment. A scheme is described which is designed to assess quality of in situ deck-slab concrete for bridges in use with asphalt wearing course, without resorting to stopping or diverting of traffic and other unnecessary delays.
