ENGINEERING PERSONNEL - WHO WILL BE THERE TO MEET THE CHALLENGE?

The issue of having sufficient personnel to meet future challenges is discussed. It is noted that the composition of the work force is changing, and there is a need to begin now to develop a multifaceted program to meet future personnel needs. The article discusses the market outlook and labor pool, and suggests possible actions: promote math and science among students; welcome foreign engineers; utilize retirees; make greater use of knowledge-based expert systems; and increase the status and compensation of engineers.
