OUT OF THE ASHES

After the 1987 King's Cross Station fire, London officials are embarking upon the painstaking process of implementing comprehensive safety measures to avoid another such incident and regain passenger confidence. Sprinklers are now being installed at 124 escalator locations and fire protection equipment is more widely available. Although this endeavor is creating inconveniences for passengers, escalators may be out of service, roofs may be stripped leaving platforms gloomy, etc., the long term goal of safety should make it all worthwhile. In addition, London Underground is working towards making stations cleaner and more attractive while educating its patrons against littering the stations and platforms.
