DUST CONTROL, ROAD MAINTENANCE COSTS, CUT WITH CALCIUM CHLORIDE
In 1986, Steuben County, Indiana, began to use calcium chloride as an alternative to asphalt-based materials for dust control on gravel roads. They have found that calcium chloride is not only less expensive, but outperforms the previously used materials. Savings in grading costs alone total $2,000 or more annually. The stabilizing effects of calcium chloride also become evident when a gravel road is eventually paved. Steuben County found that their 20 year old chip-and-seal roads that were stabilized with calcium chloride were still is good shape, while others were deteriorating. The treatment with a 38% calcium chloride solution at the rate of 0.30 to 0.35 gallon per sq yd is done twice a year. The road surface is loosened prior to application.
