NEW BRIDGE DECK REPAIR SYSTEM TESTED
New York City's 158th Street ramp of the West Side Highway had been closed for an extended period because steel plates were deemed inadequate to safely cover the continuously enlarging holes through the deck. The exodermic bridge deck repair system was utilized for the repair. The system consists of composite concrete and steel grid deck. A thin reinforced concrete overlay is cast above conventional, open, unfilled grid deck. The two components form a composite deck section. The transfer of horizontal shear between the concrete and the steel grid is fully accomplished by embedment of the vertical studs attached to the steel grid. The system was adapted to fit into a repair program using in-house repair crews and 11 Exopatch sections were installed. The repair was a success and the method has since been used (with quick-set concrete) for overnight repair of the Third Avenue Bridge.
