SHOULD THER BE A DESIGN REQUIREMENT FOR THE PH.D. DEGREE?
The dwindling supply of Ph.D-holding engineering teachers with a knowledge and ability in engineering design is noted. A basic correction to this problem is to set some modest design requirement for all doctoral programs in engineering. Ways in which this may be achieved are suggested. One proposal is that instructors of design should be registered professional engineers who keep current by an ongoing consulting effort, within the constraints of faculty commitments.
