INTELLIGENT PLANNING OF CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS
This is a demonstration of the utility of AI (artificial intelligence) techniques for generating construction project plans by presenting experience implementing SIPE (system for interactive planning and execution) to plan a multistory office building project. Several issues in automated planning are addressed. The notion of employing general principles that can be extracted from experienced human planners and physical laws are presented. Generic operators are examined, each of which can be applied to several objects to define specific construction activities. The problem of developing the least-constrained correct plan is discussed, and the issue of interaction among the activities is addressed. The limitations of SIPE are discussed. The process of generating project-specific knowledge necessary as input for SIPE from an AutoCAD data base containing a description of the project and its components is covered.
