BULKHEAD FAILURE INVESTIGATION AND REDESIGN. DISCUSSION
This is the discussion of the paper of the above title by R.D. Rieke, J.C. Crowser, and W.L. Schroeder, published in the October 1988, Vol 114, No. 10 of this journal. The discusser points out several interesting features of the original publication. The discusser notes that the original bulkhead was apparently conceptually correct but it failed due to the lack of structural maturity of the supervisory staff. The bending of the piles indicates that the failure was predominantly due to rotation, and thus the bulkhead system was improperly designed, especially its anchoring system. The 'inadequacy of geotechnics' pertaining to bulkhead failure is also discussed.
