CONCEPT AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE MOUNT BAKER RIDGE TUNNEL

The concept and construction of the 63.5ft diameter, 1332ft long, 1475ft length cut-and cover, Mount Baker Ridge Tunnel is detailed. The tunnel which is the final link of Interstate Highway I-90 into downtown Seattle, Washington, will consist of three separate levels of traffic lanes. Trucks and buses will travel on the lowest level, cars on the middle level while pedestrians and cyclists move along on the upper level. The stacked-drift method of first constructing the structural lining and then excavating the interior of the tunnel was employed.
