CITY CUTS PAVING COSTS WITH NEW EQUIPMENT
A new street paving machine bought by Sulphur, Oklahoma, is saving the city thousands of dollars by allowing city employees to perform the same improvements done by outside contractors in the past. Average savings have been just about $2,200 per city block. The paver--a T650B Power Box Asphalt Paver from Puckett Brothers Manufacturing Company, Inc., Lithonia, Georgia--will pave widths from 9 to 12 ft. Upon delivery factory personnel spent about half a day showing crew members how to operate the equipment; after that, only a few hours of operation were needed for skilled and competent use of the paver. The paver was purchased with funds generated by a city sales tax that were earmarked for an overall street improvement plan.
