ONTARIO'S DIGITAL TOPOGRAPHICAL DATA BASE

In 1972, Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) began to develop a system that would permit the geographical correlation of the physical properties, legal status, resources, and use of Ontario land. That system, the Ontario Basic Mapping (OBM) program, now produces base maps with features such as drainage (lakes, rivers, marshes), cultural entities (buildings, roadways, railways), vegetation areas (forests), and elevation information, in the form of contours on paper maps and digital elevation models in a computerized file. This article explains the OBM program's production process, data content, and data dissemination activities. Examples of its practical application are provided.
