HANDLING HAZARDOUS WASTE IN THE SHOP
This article examines federal and state hazardous waste laws to clarify what is required, at which level of government, for typical wastes generated in a fleet maintenance shop. It also identifies products, services and additional sources of information designed to ease the compliance burden. The article is divided into the following sections: What to do when it's hazardous; Generate savings from diesel drain oil; On-site recycling of solvent, antifreeze, freon; Understanding paint hazards; Junk battery laws, by state; Scrap tire disposal, by state; State hazardous waste agencies; and Underground petroleum storage tanks.
