CEDAR RAPIDS I-380: FREEWAY NOISE, MULTIPLE LAND USE, AND AESTHETICS STUDY
The study reported investigated the potential impact of an interstate highway which is to bisect the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, urban area. A questionnaire was directed to highway and transportation agencies in the United States and elsewhere concerning current practices to alleviate the adverse effects of urban freeways. Persons residing near I-235 in Des Moines were interviewed, and measurements were made of noise levels from arterial street traffic now occurring in Cedar Rapids. Forecasts of freeway noise were based on projections of traffic volumes which indicated some locations where future noise levels might be objectionable. The study recommendations are not only concerned with lessening the impact from noise but also address land-use controls, transit routing, aesthetic treatment of the freeway environment, and other measures to enhance compatibility between the freeway and the city.
