ROAD AND RAIL LINKS FALL INTO PLACE AT LAST

This article describes the road and rail schemes into and within the docklands area of London. A map is provided that shows the trunk road schemes and the docklands highways. Especial mention is made of the proposed rail links and methods of financing these. Details of the construction programme for the Limehouse to Leamouth link are provided, as are brief details of the proposed London (Waterloo)-Isle of Dogs rail link, known as the Canaryloo line. Other proposed links are: (a) an extension link further East, which would open up further development opportunities at Beckton, Barking, Stratford and Lea Valley; (b) East London river crossing; (c) a Channel Tunnel fast link by constructing a terminal at Stratford; and (d) a transporter link from the Woolwich arsenal station to the Woolwich foot tunnel and thence into the Royals. Funding is proving to be a problem, as the government would like private funding for the schemes to be well over half. Developers however are unwilling to provide more than a pound for pound public/private funding ratio. (TRRL)
