HIGH-STRENGTH CONCRETE FOR WEAR-RESISTING ROADS

In cooperation with the road laboratory, Norcem Cement a/s has obtained its own testing equipment, with which it is possible within 2-3 weeks to determine wear on road surfacing. On the basis of experiences from the tests it was noted that the strength of the concrete, the properties of the ballast and the use of at least 4-5% silica powder were some of the most important parameters to obtain durable concrete. Today it is possible to present types of concrete which are subject to wear amounting to only 20-30% of that experienced in previous types of road surfacing. Wear diminishes with increased concrete strength up to 160 mpa, which is the highest which has been tested. (Author/TRRL)
