THE BRAY VIADUCT REINCARNATION
In completing the road link from North devon to the m5, an old viaduct crossing the river bray has been used as a means of reducing environmental impact. The Bray viaduct carries a 7.3m carriageway on an in situ reinforced concrete deck which is supported on the refurbished masonry piers 30M above the valley floor. A need to raise the level of the road at the eastern end has required the construction of three new piers, increasing the number of spans to nine. In situ reinforced concrete was chosen for the deck and provides a strong visual impact. The old piers are constructed of ashlar, grit and lime cement and founded on mudstone overlain with alluvium. Generally in good condition, the remedial measures found to be necessary include some grouting below ground level and the incorporation of concrete collars around the bases to contain masonry and share any settlement load. Steel roller bearings are also to be incorporated to minimise friction at the top of piers which have been found to be sensitive to horizontal loads. (TRRL)
