RECYCLING TAKES TO THE ROADS

This article describes a new road recycling technique, which is being used for reconstructing a 2km long stretch of the B4354 at Cwilog near Criccieth, North Wales. Contractor colas roads has developed this in situ road recycling process, which is proving to be less that half the cost, twice as rapid, much tidier, and considerably less disruptive to traffic than other conventional road reconstruction techniques. In the process, small quantities of cement and specially formulated bitumen emulsion additives are simply mixed into a previously pulverised road pavement, using an American Bomag mph100r recycling machine. The stabilised mixture is reprofiled, compacted, and surface dressed in one continuous operation, to allow the road to be returned quickly to normal traffic use. The reconstructed road seems to be more solid than one rebuilt by conventional methods. The process cost less that 7.50 per sq m., and customers who have already used it have been very pleased with it. Colas started developing their recycling system early in 1987, carried out a worldwide survey of in situ recycling processes, tested many materials and combinations of stabilising additives, and conducted several field trials, before finalising their own technique.
