WEST GATE FREEWAY - A COUP FOR AUSTRALIAN BRIDGE BUILDING

Examples of advanced bridge design are examined in the construction of Melbourne's West Gate freeway over the river Yarra. Each of the twin parallel 1.85 km long, reinforced concrete, bridges were constructed by the balanced cantilever method using unique match cast segments with epoxy glued joints -a system new to autralia. The 2 m deep bridge superstructures are made up of single and twin cell units, to allow for variations in deck width, varying in mass from 22-68 t and manufactured in either 45 n or 50 N concrete. Details are given of the precise casting procedure used for manufacturing the segments and also the design of launching girder used in the construction procedure employed. (TRRL)
