SURFACE DRESSING OR GUESSING?
The author reviews the diversity of surface dressing treatments available to the highway engineer. Despite changes in loading and highway design traditional routines are often followed or a blanket solution of an excessive specification used where attention to individual situations would be more practical. Factors indicating the need for maintenance are identified. The properties required of constituents and their application are considered with frequent referral to Road Note 39. The uses of double dressings are described, e.g. On particularly stressful sites and concrete surfaces. Modified binders described include bitumen with added natural or synthetic rubber, mineral fillers or polymers, the 'hot-chip' process and the foam sprayed process pioneered by mobil. The advantages of the various techniques are outlined. The use of high specification treatments with thermosetting binders such as Shellgrip and Spraygrip is found to be largely unnecessary. Although not in widespread use, the slurry seal method shows potential for use on residential roads and the quick-curing types such as Ralumac recommended. (TRRL)
