BAUER PLANS GIANT SLURRY WALL TRENCHER

Bauer of West Germany is one of four companies offering rotary head trench cutting technology for diaphragm walls. There are plans to link up with the Japanese contractor Hazama Gumi to compete for the TRANS Tokyo bay crossing and other large marine works. Bauer would supply the mechanical design and hazama the computer control software. A machine would be required with the capacity of making cuts 150 M deep and 3 m across, twice that of the current bc30 machine using the biggest standard cutter. This may be achieved by doubling up the heads used on the bc30. Various features of Bauer's cutting machines are described and the need for a new guidance system for the larger cuts noted. Bauer's activities in the machine licencing and contract work fields are discussed and their sales figures for 1988 noted with particular reference to the bg7, bg11, bg26 and new hbm4. (TRRL)
