COMPETING WITH THE CAR
Faced with an array of public transport alternatives, often with a bewildering pricing system, it is not surprising that the customer will often choose to travel by car. The author plans to redress the balance by bringing together all the modes and offering the customer a travel credit card. Whereas the car will probably continue to be widely used in rural areas, in urban areas where most of the population lives and public transport is available, a rationalisation of the system would help reduce pollution and congestion. It is suggested that a new commercial company led by the institute of transport could run the scheme each area having a separate company with equity held by the transport providers. The package offered would include car purchase, insurance, road tax, contracted repair units, car hire, taxi travel, train, coach, bus and domestic air. A family's transport needs could be established for a year and turned into a monthly sum. The travel credit card could then be exchanged for bus passes, use of train, coach, car hire or domestic air. The advantages are listed. It is estimated 70% of all journeys would be by bus. (TRRL)
