EVALUATION OF STRENGTH OF PRECAST REINFORCED CONCRETE PORTAL CULVERTS

This paper contains a discussion, written by Brooks, IL on a paper by Maritz, G and Conradie, J. It postulates that the reduced moments in the shear span of the pinned support culverts evaluated in the original article accounts for the increase in the 'shear' strength. In their reply the authors disagree with this hypothesis. To arrive at this explanation on the basis of the failure mechanism described by Dr Kotsovos there has to be a change in the failure mechanism from that governing failure in the roller support culvert to that in the pinned support culvert. As a particular failure mechanism is associated with the force path in the shear span, a change in the failure mechanism implies a change in the force path. Such a change will arise if the moment distribution changes, and not the value as suggested. Therefore it is suggested that the critical parameter is the location of the inflection point in the shear span of the pinned portal culvert and not the value of the moments. (TRRL)
