SYSTEMATIC ROAD MAINTENANCE OF MINOR ROADS

SYSTEMATISK VEJVEDLIGEHOLDELSE AF MINDRE VEJE

This publication describes a simplified model for use in the control of the maintenance of minor roads with asphalt pavement. The above mentioned model is described in greater detail in the national road laboratory's report 50a published in 1981 (see IRRD 281310). It has been natural, following the development of technology, to transfer the model to personal computers, which are available today at so low a price that even the smallest road administrations are able to acquire them. Practical work with laboratory report 50a since 1981 has furthermore shown that there is a need to establish a priority model which makes it possible - particularly in times of reduced budgets -to make a list of priorities for investments in road maintenance on the entire networks administered by local administrations. This development -ROADOPS (optimization, planning and steering) is described in general terms in the present note. The note has been prepared on the basis of a lecture held in the spring of 1986 for the road administrations of the municipalities in question. It contains a description of how to obtain a plan of intervention by means of the model that states which works need to be commenced, and which works can be delayed or can be revised periodically. Furthermore there is a 5-year prediction model regarding the condition of the roads based on various budgetary constraints. (TRRL)
