CAR PARK WITH FLY ASH BASECOURSE

PARKERINGSPLADS MED FLYVEASKE SOM BAERELAG

The note describes preliminary tests for and measurements during the construction of the fly ash basecourse of a parking place for private cars. The basecouse is divided into 3 different areas: in part not stabilized; in part stabilized with 3, and in part stabilized with 6 parts reinforced concrete (RC). The thickness of the basecourse is 20 cm. This has been laid on a 30 cm sub-base consisting of slag from coal-fired power stations, and it was covered by a 8 cm thick concrete block paving laid on a 3 cm thick layer of sand. After 91 days the compressive strength of the fly ash stabilized with 6 parts RC was 4 times as great as the compressive strength of the unstabilized material or the fly ash with 3 parts RC. Mixing the materials with a concrete mixer did not give a completely homogeneous mixture. Lumps of (pure) fly ash were visible in samples and in contrast impregnated polished sections. (TRRL)
