RACE TO BEAT THE TRAFFIC TIDE UNDER THE THAMES

The history and importance of the West Dartford tunnel (northbound) are outlined and details given of the refurbishment project planned to be carried out over a period of 2 years beginning in March 1986. The refurbishment contract will improve the appearance of the internal finishes of the west tunnel and will modernise and restore the efficiency of the mechanical and electrical services of the tunnel. Operations include replacement of the existing tile lining by enamelled steel sheets, dismantling and cleaning of the steel ceiling grille, fitting of a new drip shed, sealing of leaks, rewiring, additional boost lighting, revisions of fire fighting equipment and refurbishment of walkways. The contractor has possession of the tunnel from 9pm until 5am and work is carefully coordinated to maximise the time available. (TRRL)
