ADAPTING RESIDENTIAL ROADS FOR SAFETY AND AMENITY
The paper examines a range of problems associated with traffic in residential areas, and the use of physical street adaptations to tackle these problems. Current practice in the UK is discussed in the context of a survey of local authorities that had implemented physical measures. It found variations in enthusiasm and approach, often depending on urban renewal policies rather than the benefits of general street design. Some authorities were unaware of practice in other European countries where reconstruction of residential streets to achieve environmental and safety improvements has been standard practice. The paper argues for a major expansion of street adaptation activity based on the experience of other European countries. (TRRL)
