THE MONETARY VALUATION OF ROAD TRAFFIC'S ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS

TIELIIKENTEEN YMPARISTOHAITTOJEN ARVIOINTI RAHASSA

The authors evaluate the amount of noise, exhaust and dust caused by road traffic in Finland, and their economical consequences. 840,000 people lived within the effect area of traffic noise in Finland in the year 1987. The number of people actually suffering from traffic noise was 208,000. The monetary value of the effect was estimated as 1,000 million fim in 1987. The monetary value of the exhaust varies between 900 and 3,400 million fim. Road traffic produced 260,000 tons of rock dust in 1987. The costs of preventing the rock dust would have been 800 million fim. The total costs due to the noise, exhaust and dust caused by road traffic are thus annually between 3 and 7 billion fim. An English version of the report will be published at the beginning of 1989 in research notes of technical research centre of Finland. (TRRL)
