THE USE OF SEAT BELTS AND CHILD RESTRAINTS IN 1986

The report deals with the use of seat belts and child restraints in cars in Finland. The data base contained 1,322 cars, which had also child passenger. The use of seat belts by adults in front and back seats, and the use of child restraints by age group were studied. 96.1% of the drivers, and 96.7 of the adult passengers in front seat used the belt. 92.6% of the front seat passengers under the age of 15 used the seat belt or child restraint. In the age group analysis, 81.8% of those under 1 year, 94.3% of those between 2 and 3, and 93.7% of those between the ages 4 and 14 used a child restraint or the seat belt. 39.2% of the back seat passengers under the age of 15 used the seat belt or child restraint. 55.6% in the age group of under 1, 56.8% of those between 2 and 3, and 34.0% of those between the ages of 4 and 14 used a child restraint or the seat belt.
