TRAFFIC SAFETY FOR YOUNGSTERS. SYMPOSIUM ON THE ROAD SAFETY EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH, ESPOO, FINLAND, 3RD JUNE 1986

The author discusses of the effect that road safety campaigns, public discussions and attitude shaping have on parents and the way they look after their children in traffic. An experiment conducted in Sweden revealed that 90% of children 4-6 years old had a bicycle of their own. No increase was noted in traffic guidance given to children nor in instructing them how to move about in traffic on foot or on bicycle. The use of safety cushions for pre-school aged children has increased rapidly. The role of parents in local, voluntary road safety work was not observed to have changed significantly. More than 90% of families with children have a car. They no longer favor traffic limitations to the extent that they used to. The results indicate that it is easier to get people to purchase childrens' restraints and to use them than to get parents and children to participate in long-term activities. These activities include, for example, traffic education and cooperating with others. (TRRL)
