RESEARCHER'S EXPERIENCES OF THE INVESTIGATION OF THE YOUNG AND CHILDREN ON TRAFFIC BEHAVIOUR. SYMPOSIUM ON THE ROAD SAFETY EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH, ESPOO, FINLAND, 3RD JUNE 1986

Empirical research contains certain special problems when analysing children and young people. There are problems even in gathering material on accidents. Information concerning accidents involving children and young people often needs to be specifically asked for before it is made available. Many details, e.g., use of alcohol, of accidents involving children and young people are obscure. It seems that driving under the influence of alcohol occurs at an earlier age than before, but these persons have, however, greater problems with alcohol than was the case earlier. Generally, research on the traffic behaviour of children and young people is beneficial. After all, the way they behave is a reflection of what is to come. Road safety measures must also be made to conform to future traffic behaviour through educational means. Active research is the only means to achieving this. (TRRL)
