THE USE OF FERRO-SLAG IN ASPHALT SURFACING

FERROKROMIKUONAN KAYTTO ASFALTTIPAALLYSTEESSA

The use of ferrochromium slag as aggregate in asphalt surfacing was investigated on a test road built North of tornio on highway 21 in 1979 and with certain laboratory tests. The rutting of ferrochromium slag pavement caused mainly by studded tires was 22% smaller than the reference in 7 years. The tests on the test track on the laboratory gave similar results, where the difference in favour of ferrochromium slag surfacing was 4%. No differences were found in the damage to the test surfacings. The changes in the penetration, viscosity and breaking point of the binder in the ferrochromium slag surfacing were of the same order as those in the reference surfacing. The void in the ferrochromium slag surfacing when it was new was 0.9 %-units and after 7 years 0.8 %-units higher than in the reference surfacing. The bitumen content of the ferrochromium slag used was 0.2 %-units higher than that of the reference. (TRRL)
