ATTRACTING STUDENTS TO A PROFESSIONAL CAREER IN TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING. AN INFORMATIONAL REPORT
It is noted that there is a shortage of graduates in the B. S., M.S. and PhD levels. This is a report of a study of the existing conditions for these degrees during 1986-87. The quality of recent civil engineering students, the desired educational program, and career decision factors are discussed. Areas needing improvement are noted including the professional image, salaries; and professional and social status of the transportation engineering professional. It is recommended that the Institute of Transportation Engineers develop a comprehensive recruitment program directed to students who have the potential to become quality professionals.
