THE ART OF TRAFFIC ENGINEERING
It is noted that the skills of a successful traffic engineer go beyond engineering analysis and include communication skils, salesmanship, and knowledge of politics, psychology, and management, as well as professional artistry. Attention is drawn to "The Reflective Practitioner: How Professionals Think in Action," by Donald Schon. Schon emphasizes that creative ability is vital to an individual's professional success and to his value to society, and that it is a definable process that can be taught in schools and professional settings. However, it has been, for the most part, ignored in today's university curriculum. One of the goals of the Institute of Transportation Engineers this year will be to help members become reflective practitioners. ITE activities will focus on professional development as well as on improving technical skills.
